Early Life:

  • Born on February 12, 1809, in a small log cabin in Kentucky, USA.

  • Grew up in poverty and had very little formal schooling.

  • Loved reading and taught himself by studying books.

  • Worked as a farmer, rail-splitter, storekeeper, and later became a lawyer.


Political Career:

  • Became involved in politics in the 1830s.

  • Served as a member of the Illinois state legislature and later in Congress.

  • Joined the newly formed Republican Party and became known for opposing the spread of slavery.


President (1861–1865):

  • Elected President in 1860.

  • Led the country during the American Civil War, a conflict between the North and the South over slavery and states’ rights.

  • Issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring that enslaved people in rebel states were free.

  • Delivered the famous Gettysburg Address, calling for a nation “of the people, by the people, for the people.”


Death:

  • Just after the North won the Civil War, Lincoln was assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre.

  • He died the next morning on April 15, 1865.
