We take food. The body burn them and produce energy. The energy keeps the body alive and running. If we take more than the requirement, we will store the food as fat in our body(gain). If we eat less, we may become skinny or tired(loss).
Even, when we are sitting idle without doing any work, the body spends energy. The body spends energy for pumping blood throughout the body; for breathing by the lungs: for firing neurons in brain for thought process; etc. To measure this expenditure of energy, we have a parameter called RMR-Rest metabolic rate. It is the daily energy (calories) your body would burn in an awake, non-fasting, at rest rate. There is an equation to find RMR using height(h), weight(w) and age. For men
RMR=4.5w +15.9h -5a + 5
For women
RMR = 4.5w+15.9h-5a -161
What we learn from these equations.
Man burn 166 calories more than woman daily. RMR increases with height and weight. Buy it decreases with age. 15.9h shows taller persons burn more calories. Hence the tall young person has high RMR. He has more advantage and will stay lean and fit. (Note, the equations apply to adults only).
Any work consumes calories. But the aerobic exercise (exercise that requires you to breath faster than normal) burns more calories. There is another parameter called ACB-'Aerobic calorie burn' which estimate calories burned per minute of aerobic exercise.
ACB = 0.02w +0.05a +0.15r - 13
r is heart rate in beats per minute.
In this equation, heart rate carries more weight (0.15r). Hence more the heart rate, more the calorie burn, what is the maximum heart rate one can achieve. There is also a formula for it.
Maximum heart rate
MHR= 192-0.007a ^2 (a-age)
because of a^2, it is a quadratic equation, it gives curve on the graph.
If you take 500 calorie ice cream, how much aerobic exercise will be required to spend it? Can you achieve the maximum heart rate? Find out using the above equations. The equations tell us that we must be careful as we age.
Even to digest the food, we require energy and burn calories. It is like, 'to make money, we require money".
Be calorie conscious and stay healthy.
