Let us learn, how to protect ourselves from cold properly. Our body is slightly at a higher temperature than the environment. The body's heat warms up the air surrounding it. Hence there is always a thin layer of warm air surrounding the human body. In summer, we want to push away the air layers continuously. Hence we use high- speed fans. Nature also cools the body by sweating.
In winter, we want to retain the warm air layers as much as possible. Hence, we use woolen clothes with hairy fibers. These hairy structures in the cloth trap the air molecules and do not allow them to escape easily. That is why some animals have hairs naturally on them. Tight thermal-wears also trap the air layers.
We shiver in cold. That is the body's response to chillness. The shivering-contraction and relaxation of muscles create heat and increases the body's surface temperature.
If you run in a winter morning, does it help? Yes. If you run fast, warm layers around the body blow away, but heat is generated internally. That will raise the body's temperature. All of us cannot run. Hence cover the body as much as possible, and walk briskly. That will do.
During chillness, we crouch our body like a baby in the womb. Here, we reduce the exposed surface of our body and thereby we retain the warmth as long as possible.
Our normal body temperature is 37- degree c. If the environment's temperature is very higher (more than 40c) or very lower (less than 25 c), we feel hot or cold.
Whenever the body suffers ill-health, the first symptom is the fever . During fever, our body temperature increases further, if it is very higher than surrounding's temperature, we feel cold and shiver. Skin is the main organ which regulates our temperature.
